Wonderful Wednesdays Summer Program Series
at the Museum of York County - New in 2008!
This summer, enjoy our new family-friendly summer program series, wher our museum collections come to life. Meet majestic birds of prey, experience African drumming, stories, and songs, and learn how we are all connected to our river and the natural world. Afterwards, explore the museum, take part in special hands-on activities, or enjoy a picnic outdoors. Groups of 15 or more must call 803.981.9182 for advance registrations.
Wednesdays June 11 - July 30
Special program: 11 a.m.
Hands-on activities: 12 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Cost includes museum admission:
Adults $7, Seniors $6, Youth 4-17 $5, and Children under 3 FREE, CHM members FREE. Group rates available.
McCelvey's Arts-In-Education Program 2007-2008
McCelvey Center offers quality performing arts programs to regional schools. For information or to make reservations, please call 803.684.3948 ext. 27, Monday-Friday between 10 am and 4 pm. Space is limited and reservations are strongly recommended.

Regular Admission
Step back in time as costumed interpreters bring to life the 18th and 19th centuries. Witness life in the Carolina Backcountry through activities such as farming, shearing sheep, picking cotton and military drills. Activites and demonstrations vary weekly.

Parent/Teen Kayak Trip
May 3, 5 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Cost: $22 CHM members; $25 non-members
Discover the Catawba River's hidden stories through an afterhours tour of the documentary photography exhibit, RIVER DOCS: a Catawba River Narrative, then experience the river up close. After kayaking the quiet coves of Lake Wylie, participants may bring a picnic supper to enjoy around a campfire. Shuttle, equipment and instruction provided by Rock Hill Parks & Recreation.

River Ramblers Series
Wateree to Wylie: Great Falls
May 10, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Museum of York County
Cost: $20 CHM members; $25 for non-members.
Members may sign up for all six trips for a discounted coast of $100.
The first in a series of monthly day trips will explore the Great Falls dam and Rocky Mount. Geologist Irene Boland, natural history curator Steve Fields and historian Michael Scoggins will introduce participants to the natural and cultural history of the area. Wear clothing appropriate for moderate hiking, bring bag lunch, water and sunscreen. Meet at the Museum of York County. Must be 18 or older to participate due to van restrictions.

Atlanta on My Mind
May 14 & 15, 2008
Cost: $275 CHM Members; $300 non-members
Prices are per person based on double occupancy. $75 will be charged for a single supplement.
(Cost includes: transportation via motor coach, overnight accommodations at the Hampton Inn- Buckhead, dinner at Pricci's restaurant in Buckhead, one lunch, one breakfast, all admission and tour fees.)
Join us for a special overnight trip to Atlanta to sample the city's best in history and art. We will visit the High Museum of Art for a guided highlights tour and a self-guided tour of The Louvre and the Ancient World. The Atlanta History Center and the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum will round out our trip in "historic" style. En route to Atlanta we will make a special stop at the new Upcountry History Museum of Greenville.
Accommodations and dinner will be in the hip and happening Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta.

Historical Marker Unveiling
May 15, 11 a.m.
Black Street at Hampton, downtown Rock Hill, SC
The Black Plantation/Hampton Rally historical marker will commemorate the Alexander Templeton Black plantation, which originally covered the area where downtown Rock Hill is now located; and an impromptu rally that took place in Rock HIll on October 12, 1876, for South Carolina gubernatorial candidate and former Confederate general Wade Hampton.

Battle of Huck's Defeat

The Revolutionary War in the Carolina backcountry was one of intense fighting that involved all of the society. Three significant battles will be reenacted including Huck's Defeat which will take place near the actual site of the engagement. During the day see how the soliders and civilians of the Carolina Piedmont survived the war. Historic music performances, firearms demonstrations, talks by noted experts, and camp life will be shown throughout the weekend. Younger visitors can explore the Children's Encampment area and try their hands at historic toys and games, take part in military drills and explore a Revolutionary War camp.
