Rise and shine! Wake up to sounds of farm animals, the smell of breakfast in the brick kitchen, washing up in the house, and daily chores on the plantation. This is a great opportunity for children to engage with the 1840’s plantation by being a part of the morning routine.

Nature Trail
Explore the ecology of a Piedmont forest along the Museum of York County’s 3/4 mile Nature Trail. From lichens to lizards, pitcher plants to pine trees, take a close look at nature from the bottom up. Activity sheets available; pencils not provided. Self-guided.

Animal Adventure Tour
Preschool–2nd Grade
This 30-minute tour is specially designed to introduce our younger visitors to the Museum and its natural history collection. Children will journey on an animal adventure. They will hear make-believe stories about animals and learn some amazing animal facts as well.

The Friendly Stars

Did you know the sun and stars could talk? Well, here in the planetarium they can! Sol, or sun, will take us on a tour of this family we call the solar system. The stars won’t be left out as they guide us across the night sky to find the Big Dipper. Only 30 minutes long, this program is an interactive introduction to the night sky especially suited for K4 level students.

The Secret of the Cardboard Rocket
K5–2nd Grade
In this exciting 30-minute planetarium show, two youngsters build a cardboard rocket and set off on an amazing voyage of exploration through the solar system. An informative and quick-paced program, perfect for introducing outer space to young ones!

Follow the Drinking Gourd

During the era of slavery in the U.S., many slaves fled to freedom in Canada. A special coded song helped them find their way by using the stars in the sky for navigation. Based on the children’s book of the same name, this planetarium program contains a live demonstration of the Northern sky, showing the Big Dipper (The Drinking Gourd) and the North Star. An excellent accompaniment to multi-cultural studies.

Kinetyx is a four member ensemble that links dance to Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies. Active Learning Performances include audience participation activities and choreographic works. Art ‘n Play in Africa

African culture today is a mix of ancient traditions and contemporary
lifestyles. Students will tour the exhibit, “New Perspectives on African People and Places,” immersing themselves into activities described in the exhibit. Participants will express themselves by creating an African wealth display and playing mancala, the oldest game in human history that is still played today.

Can a circle become a head? Can a triangle become a beak? It’s up to your imagination. Drawing animals can be easy and fun for all ages! This early elementary program demonstrates how learning to see animals as shapes can make anyone an adept animal artist! Perfect for reviewing shapes and colors, and provides good practice in copying and following directions. This is a quick paced and informative class designed for the young at art! Supplies will be provided.

The Sun’s Family

Circling, bending and tilting, children will become rocky midgets or gas giants of the Solar System as they revolve around the Sun. This kinesthetic program introduces students to the basic properties of the Solar System. The planetarium program, The Secret of the Cardboard Rocket, is a perfect complement to this interactive program. Students are required to wear or bring a pair of socks for participation in this program.

Life on the Plantation
3rd–12th Grades
Program Length: 90 minutes; Maximum of 100 students per time slot.
Cotton is King! This is the cash crop. How did the plantation operate to support this economy before the Civil War? Exploring an 1840s plantation,
students will gain insight and participate in activities to appreciate how people worked, lived and survived. Activities change seasonally and may include a plantation house tour, slave life, textiles, cooking, hands-on cotton processing and a farm animal tour.

Liberty or death? The choice is yours! In this interactive program, students learn how people from all walks of life including civilian and enslaved people were drawn into the Revolutionary War. Awesome Animal Adaptations + Tour

Explore animal classification along with special adaptations that allow animals to survive in their distinct environments. Students will investigate the following topics:
• Classification of organisms, focusing on vertebrates
• Characteristics of distinct environments (biomes) that determine the plants and animals that live there
• Diversity of tooth structure for an animal’s survival
• Super senses that nocturnal animals use to live in a world with little light
This one-hour tour is highly recommended for 3rd – 7th graders and is an excellent complement to the science curriculum.

Skywatch is a general astronomy program about “what’s up” in the night sky. Constellations, planets, the Sun and Moon will be studied according to grade level. A live sky constellation and planet presentation, how to use a star chart, followed by a question and answer period will be included in each program. The students will leave the planetarium knowing how to locate several constellations
and any planets currently visible in the night sky.

Take a glance at our solar system by viewing current images taken deep in space. You will be exposed to the planets’ orbits, their tilt of inclination, comet and asteroid impact, and the effects of
gravity on planets. This program examines the geology of the inner planets and the atmospheres of the outer planets. We will explore from the working of our sun to the outer realms of the
orbits of the planets, and venture out into other galaxies beyond the Milky Way.

Explore the Made in Nature exhibit with a focus on toys hand-made from natural materials. From planting to producing, this little plant dramatically reshaped the social, cultural, economic and natural landscape of the Old South. Life on the Plantation

Cotton is King! This is the cash crop. How did the plantation operate to support this economy before the Civil War? Exploring an 1840s plantation,
students will gain insight and participate in activities to appreciate how people worked, lived and survived. Activities change seasonally and may include a plantation house tour, slave life, textiles, cooking, hands-on cotton processing and a farm animal tour.

The Backcountry in Revolt: A Revolutionary War Experience
3rd–12th Grade
Program Length: 90 minutes; 9:30 & 11:30 a.m. Maximum of 100 students per time slot.
Liberty or death? The choice is yours! In this interactive program, students learn how people from all walks of life including civilian and enslaved people were drawn into the Revolutionary War. Students will march and train as a militia unit. Other activities may include a musket-firing demonstration, cooking, spinning, backcountry medicine or storytelling.

Awesome Animal Adaptations + Tour
3rd–7th Grade
Explore animal classification along with special adaptations that allow animals to survive in their distinct environments. Students will investigate the following topics:
• Classification of organisms, focusing on vertebrates
• Characteristics of distinct environments (biomes) that determine the plants and animals that live there
• Diversity of tooth structure for an animal’s survival
• Super senses that nocturnal animals use to live in a world with little light
This one-hour tour is highly recommended for 3rd – 7th graders and is an excellent complement to the science curriculum.
For a science/social studies component add the Carolina Piedmont Past, featuring the landscapes and lifeways of the Carolina Piedmont 600 years ago.

Skywatch is a general astronomy program about “what’s up” in the night sky. Constellations, planets, the Sun and Moon will be studied according to grade level. A live sky constellation and planet presentation, how to use a star chart, followed by a question and answer period will be included in each program. The students will leave the planetarium knowing how to locate several constellations
and any planets currently visible in the night sky.

The Sun, Planets & Beyond

Take a glance at our solar system by viewing current images taken deep in space. You will be exposed to the planets’ orbits, their tilt of inclination, comet and asteroid impact, and the effects of
gravity on planets. This program examines the geology of the inner planets and the atmospheres of the outer planets. We will explore from the working of our sun to the outer realms of the
orbits of the planets, and venture out into other galaxies beyond the Milky Way.

Students will participate in hands-on experiences to observe a display of hand-made toys, discuss materials and styles of spinning tops, investigate and report how long a top will spin, record the results in a graph, compare the dynamics of design in tops, and make and take a top using recycled materials.
