Internship Opportunities

INTERNSHIPS 

EDUCATION & INTERPRETATION : Responsible for creation and presentation of programs for students and visitors of all ages and interests, portray the life-ways and customs of the 18th and 19th centuries in the SC backcountry, provide interpretation of exhibits and collections.

Education Intern (Museum of York County )

  • Reporting to the School Programs Specialist, intern will assist in a variety of projects which will include creation of a school program for children in K-12 on the Catawba River and its impact on the geographic area through which it flows by focusing aspects of life along the river such as flora and fauna, transportation, industry, local population, etc., and developing support materials . Candidates should have a background in education, science, or history, have strong computer, research, and written communication skills, and be able to work independently. Time commitment: Flexible; ten to fifteen hours a week.

Historic Farm Intern (Historic Brattonsville)

  • Reporting to the Historic Farmer, intern will assist with all aspects of maintaining an historic farm including garden and field crop production, maintenance of small-scale heritage breeds production, farm equipment maintenance and repair, as well as interpreting historic farming to summer camps, school groups, and the walk in visitor. Candidates should have a background in history, museum studies, or agriculture, a keen interest in historic interpretation, the ability to work outdoors in a wide variety of conditions, the ability to interact with the public and work independently. Time commitment: fifteen to twenty hours a week.

    Interpretive Facilitation Intern – Fall 2008 (Historic Brattonsville)

    • Reporting to the Interpretation Manager, intern will help with creation and execution of acting workshops, audition, selection, rehearsal process, and performance of interpretive scenarios at Christmas Candlelight Tours. Duties include assisting with auditions, selection, and rehearsals for historic scenarios; maintaining set dressing and prop availability during rehearsals and performances ; acting as stage manager during the event in early December. Candidates must be highly organized, have excellent communication skills, be able to work independently. Background in history, public history, theater, or performing arts helpful. Time commitment: twelve to fifteen hours a week with flexible hours.

    EXHIBITS : Involved in stages of exhibit production: planning, design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of exhibits at all three CHM sites. Subjects include art, art history, science, history, archaeology, anthropology, or a combination.

    Exhibition Project Intern (Museum of York County)

    • Reporting to the Exhibitions Manager, intern will assist with production and installation of new exhibit components and educational program support materials. Candidates must be available weekdays, have an interest in learning museum exhibit techniques, have a flexible schedule and the ability to work independently. Artistic talent, set design experience, skill with tools, and knowledge of construction techniques are helpful but not required. Time commitment is flexible, preferably ten to twenty hours a week. .

    Exhibit Research Intern (Museum of York County)

    • Reporting to the Exhibitions Manager, intern will document and inventory local resources of information, photographs, and artifacts related to history of the Museum of York County to inform planning for the Heritage Gallery at the future Museum of Life and the Environment. Duties will include organizing files, cataloging information, creating an inventory of resources, and creating a finding aid using MS Excel. Intern will conduct research at local educational institutions and libraries, community service agencies, newspaper archives, and with individuals as assigned. Candidates should be interested in history, have working knowledge of computers, scanners and digital cameras, have strong organizational skills, show attention to detail, and be able to work independently. Time commitment: flexible, ten to twelve hours a week.

    HUMAN RESOURCES : Our Human Resources Interns will spend ten to twelve weeks gaining real-world experience working as a part of the Human Resources team. These positions are for motivated students desiring a significant challenge and seeking to accelerate their careers.

    HR Generalist Intern (Museum of York County)

    • Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, intern will engage strategic cross-functional activities including revising and administering our annual Employee Satisfaction Survey (ESS), tracking and reporting the results, team building, updating the employment section of the website, conducting new employee orientation as needed, researching current employment law and updating organizational forms, policies and handbooks as needed. Applicants should be hard working, enthusiastic, and resourceful seniors or graduate students in any of the following majors: HR Management, Business Management (HR Concentration), Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Other requirements include minimum 3.0 GPA, Windows/Office XP/Internet computing skills, and prior business/office experience. The ideal candidate should possess outstanding written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities. Must be able to juggle multiple projects, meet deadlines and be highly motivated and flexible with a positive attitude. Minimum of 2-3 days/week, flexible hours are available.

    MARKETING : Promotes the CHM and its programs through marketing, advertising and public relations.

    Public Relations Intern (Museum of York County)

    • Reporting to the Public Relations Coordinator, intern will provide support within the Marketing Department by creating a photographic record of CHM events and by digitizing and cataloging department slide collection. Must have access to computer with flatbed scanning, slide scanning and photography software capabilities; background in art history, journalism, arts or museum administration, or related field; excellent photography skills, attention to detail , and a high level of competency with camera, computer and photography software. Time commitment: ten to fifteen hours a week with flexible hours.

    MUSEUM COLLECTIONS : Collections include historic structures, decorative and fine arts, furniture, quilts, collections of African and Native American artifacts, and specimen collections including taxidermy mounts. Collections and artifacts are preserved, cataloged, housed and inventoried for use by scholars and the public.

    Archives Intern (Historical Center – McCelvey Center )

    • Reporting to the Archivist, intern will assist in protecting and preserving historical documents and photographs and making them available for public use by placing documents in acid free folders, organizing collections of maps, news clippings, rare books, creating box lists and finding aids, indexing wills and court books, and identifying and processing photographs. Candidates should have a love of history and primary source material and enjoy detailed work. Time commitment: flexible; ten to fifteen hours a week.

    Search Room Intern (Historical Center – McCelvey Center )

    • Reporting to the Archivist, intern will assist in answering research questions and in running search room. Duties to include assistance with research projects and walk-in requests for genealogical/family history information, answering phone and email requests for information, re-shelving, filing, making copies for users with a goal of providing excellent service and timely answers to requests for assistance and information. Candidates should have an interest in historical research, the ability to work independently, be detail-oriented. Library research skills helpful. Time commitment: flexible; minimum eight hours a week.

    Specimen Preparer (Museum of York County )

    • Reporting to the Curator of Natural History, intern will assist in the creation of study specimens using skins of frozen birds and mammals by removing skin, inserting stuffing, and sewing up skin with the ultimate goal of developing a comprehensive collection of study specimens representing native species. Candidates should be upperclassmen or graduate students majoring in Biology, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and be available during regular business hours. Time commitment: flexible; ten to fifteen hours a week.

    RESEARCH : The Archives and Library house a large collection of original documents and scholarly publications on topics related to the CHM mission and genealogical reference material. Serves scholars, students, and visitors doing genealogical research.  

    Research Intern (Historical Center – McCelvey Center )

    • Reporting to the Historian, intern will conduct background research on projects related to the history of York County and the Carolina piedmont using microfilm, newspapers and books, copy primary source material and records, and will organize results of research into outline using MS Word or Excel. Candidates should be interested in local history, have research, computer and organizational skills, be detail-oriented and able to work independently. Time commitment: flexible; ten to fifteen hours a week.

Research Intern – Revolutionary War Institute (Historical Center – McCelvey Center )

  • Reporting to the Historian, intern will assist in organizing files and cataloging information for Southern Revolutionary War Institute . Duties will include organizing filing system for Revolutionary War research data, creating a finding aid using MS Excel and creating an annotated Revolutionary War bibliography. Candidates should be interested in history, have computer and organizational skills, be able to work independently and pay attention to detail. Time commitment: flexible; ten to fifteen hours a week.ten to fifteen hours a week.

SUPPORT SERVICES : Responsible for the cleaning, repair and maintenance of all buildings, setting up for special events and for grounds keeping at our three sites. 

Landscape Project Intern (Historic Brattonsville)

  • Reporting to the Property Manager, intern will create a a plan to divert rainwater and prevent erosion around historic structures and trails, capturing water for use on historic farm or landscaping at Historic Brattonsville. Candidate should have a background in civil engineering or landscape design and the ability to work independently. Time commitment: flexible; twelve to fifteen hours a week.

VISITOR SERVICES : Performs admissions function at the museums. Ensures that visitors feel welcome, are properly oriented to the museum and generally assists in any way possible. Answers phone inquiries, gives directions to the site, and creates statistical reports. Promotes membership and upcoming events.  

Data Analysis Intern (Historic Brattonsville)

  • Reporting to the Visitor Services Manager, intern will analyze existing visitation data at each of the three sites of the Culture and Heritage Museums to discover the ebb and flow of visitors by season, day of the week and time of day and create a needs assessment for staffing for each site based on the results of analysis. Candidates should have a background in business, statistics, or math, be proficient with MS Excel, and be detailed oriented and able to work independently. Time commitment: Flexible; ten to fifteen hours a week.
