Landscapes and Lifeways: The Carolina Piedmont 600 Years Ago and Today

The Landscapes and Lifeways exhibit compares our contemporary Piedmont landscape with the Piedmont of 600 years ago. Two new dioramas show Carolina Piedmont landscapes and wildlife in the 1400s, before European exploration and settlement. View animals that once lived in the Piedmont (bison, cougar, elk and wolves) alongside species seen here today (deer, vultures, quail and heron). Discover how native peoples relied on the natural resources of the Carolina Piedmont – the river, trees, land, plants and wildlife – for their survival, and how they changed the landscape to support their ways of life.

Sponsored in part by Kathy & Larry Wilson, Rock Hill Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Williams & Fudge, Inc., Founders Federal Credit Union, Becca & Harry Dalton and Ell Close.

Vernon Grant's Wild and Whimsical Animals

During his career as a professional illustrator, Vernon Grant often featured animals in the artwork he created for magazine covers, product packaging and children’s literature. Rendered with wit, charm and a whimsical flair, Grant’s illustrations portrayed animals in many delightful and imaginary settings. This exhibit of original and published artworks offers a unique perspective on both the tame and wild creatures we encounter and enjoy throughout our lives.

Vernon Grant’s charming children’s book published in 1934 comes to life in this exhibit. The dreamland adventures of a little boy named Buzz are embellished with 3-D interactive projects and landscape scenery inspired by the book’s illustrations. Families and young children will enjoy this safe, imaginative setting for creative play that encourages physical activity and challenges young bodies and minds.

Catawba River Gallery

Families learn by doing at the Catawba River Gallery. Through looking, touching, listening, doing and exploring, children and adults discover how “the river touches our lives every day.” At the water table, visitors literally get their hands wet while learning how rivers can be dammed or flooded and how people have crossed rivers in different ways at different times in history.

River Litter Art

Sculptures by art students from Mount Gallant Elementary and Dutchman Creek Middle schools were created using “litter” collected from the Catawba River. Local paddler, photographer and conservationist Bill Stokes rescued these balls of all shapes and sizes, fishing floats, toys and other items. The exhibit inspires creative recycling while building community awareness of conservation of our natural resources.
