Suzy Bogguss Returns to McCelvey Center Stage

Friday, March 22, 2013 at 7:30 pm

YORK, SC – A regular on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion,  Suzy Bogguss  has emerged from her platinum-record and award-winning career in country music as a Grammy Award-winning folk artist, winning the prestigious  Traditional Folk Album in 2005 for “Beautiful Dreamer:  The Songs of Stephen Foster.”  In 2011 Bogguss released “American Folk Songbook,” a CD and companion songbook at all Cracker Barrel Country Stores, followed by a wide release to other fine retail and digital outlets.  Filled with songs that form the very fabric of American musical history, Bogguss breathes new life into these classics with contemporary arrangements that are fresh and beautiful.

As Suzy writes in the introduction to “America Folk Songbook,”   “Music has always been my purest joy even as a child.  One of my favorite memories is my grade-school music teacher pounding on the piano and leading the class in rousing renditions of folk songs from all around the world.”  As part of the Culture & Heritage Museums tribute to National Youth Art Month, Suzy Bogguss will have a chance to relive her elementary music experience with students from Mrs. Young’s 3rd Grade class from Harold C. Johnson Elementary School in York.  The class will have a special music session with Suzy Bogguss and will perform two songs with her during her concert at the McCelvey Center’s Lowry Family Theater.

Throughout her career Bogguss has shown a knack for blending songs of substance and depth with mass-market appeal.  Songs like “Aces,” “Drive South,” Someday Soon,” and “Letting Go” took her to the top of the country music charts.  Along the way she won rave reviews from critics and her peers.  She won the Country Music Associations Horizon Award in 1992 and Album of the Year Award in 1994.  Bogguss performed at the McCelvey Center last spring and by resounding request from area fans, she and her golden-throated vocals and down-to-earth charm will return on March 22nd.
