Take a Child Outside Week

York County, South Carolina is Celebrating National “Take a Child Outside Week” with Three Events, Three locations, for Three Days


 


YORK COUNTY, SC – The Museum of York County, Anne Springs Close Greenway and the Rock Hill Outdoor Center at Riverwalk will be presenting special outside activities to celebrate "Take a Child Outside Week."


 


The national program happens Sept. 24 -30 and is designed to encourage children and adults to spend time together outdoors. “Take a Child Outside Week” aims to help children develop a better understanding and appreciation of the environment and an enthusiasm for exploring the natural world. The outside initiative originated with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and is held in cooperation with partner organizations worldwide.


 


The York County, SC partners in “Take a Child Outside Week” have events planned for Sept. 25-27 to highlight their own unique outdoor attractions. All outdoor programs will go on rain or shine; appropriate outdoor clothing is recommended.


 


Anne Springs Close Greenway will be open on Friday, September 25 from 7 to 10 p.m. for an evening of outdoor fun. The drop-in program includes night hikes, games, and interactive outdoors festivities. Finish the night with a s’more for only $1. 


Program fees:  Free for members, $5 for non-members

The Museum of York County will host a celebration of being outdoors on Saturday, September 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A spectacular live butterfly release is scheduled for noon. Outdoor explorers can take part in a scavenger hunt and hike along the three-quarter mile Piedmont Trail (the trail has some steps.)  September is the perfect time to check out the museum’s Monarch Waystation where Monarch butterflies stop and linger in a sustaining habitat on their incredible journey winging south.

The Rock Hill Outdoor Center at Riverwalk is sponsoring a free outdoor event on Sunday, Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to noon. Meeting at the Piedmont Medical Center Trailhead at Riverwalk, outdoor educators will talk about trees and participants can create leaf and bark rubbings. Walk along the scenic Catawba River to experience a Reading-With-Nature-Trail featuring the nature inspired children’s book “Step Gently Out” by Helen Frost.


Prize Drawings:  Attend two of the three events and become eligible for a prize drawing.  Ask for details during admission for the events.
