Get outside and develop a better understanding of the natural world during National Take a Child Outside Week
YORK COUNTY, SC – York County is celebrating National Take aChild Outside Week with events at three locations on Sept. 23 and 24. The Museum of York County, Anne Springs Close Greenway and Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism will be presenting special outside activities to encourage residents to "Take a Child Outside."
Spending time together outdoors is the mantra of the annual national program. “Take a Child Outside Week” aims to help children develop a better understanding and appreciation of the environment and an enthusiasm for exploring the natural world. The outsideinitiative originated with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and is held in cooperation with partner organizations worldwide. The York County, SC partners in “Take a Child Outside Week” have events planned to highlight their own unique outdoor attractions. All outdoor programs will go on rain or shine; appropriate outdoor clothing is recommended.
Museum of York County:
Museum of York County celebrates “Take a Child Outside” on Sat., Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Two live butterfly releases are planned at noon and 1:30 p.m. (weather permitting.) Meet the York County Beekeepers Association and York County Master Gardeners. Activities include a garden and trail scavenger hunt and exploring the museum’s .75 mile nature trail. Anne Springs Close Greenway:
Anne Springs Close Greenway will be hosting a “Take a ChildOutside” drop-in event on Sun., Sept. 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. Crafts, animal meet and greets, and guided story-book hikes are planned for the day. Free for members, $5 for non-members. The Greenway Nature Center is located at the Lake Haigler entrance intersection of Highway 21 and Coltharp Road in Fort Mill. ascgreenway.org
Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism:
Join Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism for a free outdoor event on Sat., Sept. 23. Bring your bikes and helmets and meet at 10 a.m. in the Giordana Velodrome parking lot. PRT staff will go over the rules of the road before you spin away for a family trail ride. Helmets are required; a limited number of loaner bikes are available by calling or e-mailing Hope Matthews at (803)817-5122 or email@example.com. The Giordana Velodrome is located at 1000 Riverwalk Parkway in Rock Hill.
