A Bridge to the Catawba
Many adventures and explorations currently offered by the Culture & Heritage Museums create a bridge to the new Museum being developed on the Catawba River. Focused on the Catawba river, an important asset of our new site, these interactive events give a sense of the experience we will offer at the innovative environmental history museum.
River Ramblers Series
Worth Mountain Park & Pickneyville
August 9, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Museum of York County
Cost: $20 CHM members; $25 for non-members.
A new series of monthly day trips will introduce participants to the story of the Catawba and Broad rivers. Geologist Irene Boland, naturalist Steve Fields and historian Michael Scoggins discuss the natural and cultural history of the area. Wear clothing appropriate for moderate hiking, bring bag lunch, water and sunscreen. Meet at the Museum of York County. Must be 18 or older to participate due to van restrictions.

This family workshop, facilitated by Liz Baird of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, is offered in recognition of international “Take a Child Outside Week” (Sept. 24-30). Learn about the benefits of outdoor time and share in activities. Each family will receive a magnification loupe to take home.

Learn about two projects, the Carolina Thread Trail and A Bridge and Its Place and what they could mean to you. Carolina Thread Trail Project Director Ann Browning will give an overview of the planned regional trail network. Deborah Ryan, associate professor in the School of Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte will discuss a project for planning footbridges to unite segments of the trail. Designs and results of the student study are on exhibit at the Museum of York County.
River Sweep

Keep our river clean and help our environment by picking up litter along the shores of the Catawba River as part of River Sweep 2008. Last year, nearly 3,000 South Carolinians collected more than 30 tons of trash during this annual statewide cleanup of our waterways. Local participants will receive a free ticket to the River Docs exhibit at the Museum of York County. Water and light snacks provided.
