Historical Center

The primary concern of the Historical Center of York is to preserve and protect records and to make these records available to researchers in the Reference Room of the Archives.

Request by visitors

The Historical Center of York County is open free to the public. Reference staff are available to assist visitors conducting their own research at no charge. If you call ahead, staff can have resources pulled for your visit. Contact us at 803.684.3948, option 2.

Researchers are invoiced for the cost of copies at the rate of twenty-five cents ($.25) per page.

Request by e-mail

Please use historicalcenter@chmuseums.org to submit research requests.

Requests via e-mail do not take precedence over other requests. Requests are answered in the order they are received, regardless of the means of transmission.

E-Mail requests should be as concise as possible and limited to one specific question. 

Include your name, phone number and mailing address so we can contact you if we experience difficulties responding to your email or have questions for you.

Reference staff will spend one hour of research per request.

Requesters need to mail a non-refundable $5.00 research fee per inquiry; waived for York County residents. This entitles the requester up to four pages of photocopies per inquiry. For requests requiring more research, we charge $10.00 an hour after the first hour.

Request by telephone

The primary responsibility of the reference staff is to supervise the use of materials and to provide assistance to those researchers who have traveled to use the holdings.

Requests by telephone should be limited to general reference questions or a search of our finding aids.

Reference staff will direct callers to submit a written request for more specific information via letter or email at historicalcenter@chmuseums.org.
