Historical Center

The primary concern of the Historical Center of York is to preserve and protect records and to make these records available to researchers in the Reference Room of the Archives.

The Reference staff can answer requests for general information about its collections and services as well as specific queries for information found in its archival holdings by e-mail, telephone, letter or fax.

Requests are answered in the order they are received, regardless of their means of transmission. The Archives can only answer ONE specific question about one record or one person's record per request. Request by e-mail

Please use our online Research Request Form to submit research requests by email. If this does not work for any reason, please mail in your request.

Requests via e-mail do not take precedence over other requests. Requests are answered in the order they are received, regardless of the means of transmission.

E-Mail requests should be as concise as possible and limited to one specific question. Please complete the Research Request Form on our website.

Include your name and mailing address so we can contact you if we experience difficulties responding to your email. Reference staff will spend one hour of research per request.

York County, South Carolina residents are exempt from being charged a non-refundable research fee per each inquiry.

Non-York County, South Carolina residents will need to mail a non-refundable $5.00 research fee per inquiry. This entitles the requester up to four pages of photocopies per inquiry; additional photocopies will be charged at the rate of twenty-five cents ($.25) per page. For requests requiring more extensive research, we will charge $10.00 an hour after the first hour.

Researchers will be invoiced for the cost of copies at the rate of twenty-five cents ($.25) per page.

Request by telephone

The primary responsibility of the reference staff is to supervise the use of materials and to provide assistance to those researchers who have traveled to use the holdings.

Requests by telephone should be limited to general reference questions or a search of our finding aids.

Reference staff will direct callers to submit a written request for more specific information (see Request by Letter)

Publishing Policy

Permission from the Historical Center of York County must be obtained in writing before manuscripts, diaries, correspondence, documents, photos or any other unpublished materials from its holdings can be published.

In giving permission to copy, quote, or publish, the York County Culture and Heritage Commission does not surrender its own right to publish such materials or to grant permission to others to do so.

The researchers shall assume full responsibility for the use of material and shall indemnify and hold harmless the Historical Center of York County from any claims arising as a result of his or her use of the materials so obtained.

In the event that the donors have retained literary rights to their materials, the researcher must obtain permission from them before publication of any such material.
