The Museum of York County is sponsoring monthly Citizen Science and Photography opportunities throughout the growing season (April-October). Citizen Science utilizes citizens to collect data that can be used in long-term nationwide research. You can contribute to science while you explore the Carolinas! Images submitted will be judged by a panel of Museum staff members and a winner for best photo announced each month. The winning photos may be displayed at the Museum of York County in a fall exhibition.
For the month of June, our theme is insects! Identify on iNaturalist (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/carolina-biodiversity-myco) by noon on June 23th or email them to email@example.com. We will meet for a Zoom insect discussion based upon the Citizen Science submissions and announce the photo contest winner which will be displayed at the Museum of York County in a fall exhibition. Make plans to join the discussion June 24 at 6 p.m. at https://yorkcountygov.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_qLuUYt5VQLeoHsthoN9BBg?fbclid=IwAR2I-g6PsjpR3mRB4af_NUQrbhCd_PO6TnSrXFdR5reCap92UJEDU3zy9sM.
The hardest part of this month’s theme is identifying the insect, but the following website is a helpful resource:https://www.insectidentification.org/bugfinder.php. Identify the insect if you can and enter your location (city and state). If you cannot identify your insect, people on iNaturalist can help make suggestions. Also users under 13 years old, may prefer iNaturalist’s app, Seek, which requires no registration and is a great way to learn about our natural world. Just take a picture of an organism and Seek will identify it for you! Find it here: https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/seek_app
