Way Back When: Ice Age Beasts of Carolina

Opens June 15, 2013 at the Museum of York County

Rock Hill, SC – The Museum of York County announces the debut of a new exhibit transporting visitors back in time to the Carolinas during the “Ice Ages”.

Way Back When: Ice Age Beasts of Carolina opens Saturday, June 15, 2013.  The Carolinas were very different during the Ice Ages.  Scientists call this period in earth’s history the “Pleistocene Epoch.” The new exhibition portrays habitats from three different scenes in time starting from the Early Pleistocene (2 million years ago) to the Late Pleistocene (18,000 years ago).  The exhibition transports visitors back to a time when massive mastodons browsed our woodlands, giant ground sloths ambled along the forest edge and fierce saber-toothed cats prowled the prairies.  The exhibit will be on view through the summer of 2014.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is a full-sized reproduction of a Jefferson’s ground sloth.  This woolly giant tipped the scales at 500 pounds and towered over 6 feet when standing.  Also featured in the exhibition will be a jaguar, a dire wolf, a carcass of a young mastodon, and a caribou.

A special Way Back When Family Fun Day is planned for the opening on June 15 from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm.  Learn about the massive beasts that were native to the Carolinas.  Visit the Naturalist Center for fossil discoveries and create cave paintings based on your discoveries. The Planetarium will depict how the night sky looked “way back when” and showings of the planetarium program  “Ice Worlds” will explore how ice shapes the landscape and the natural systems on earth and on other planets and moons in our solar system.  A special viewing of the animated film “Ice Age” will be presented at 2:00 pm.  Concessions will be available for purchase.
