Historical Center staff receives Award of Merit

YORK, SC – In recognition of their assistance in helping rescue historical records damaged during a flood at the York County Courthouse on Nov. 14, 2008, the staff of the Historical Center of York County at the McCelvey Center will receive an Award of Merit from the South Carolina Historical Records Advisory Board.

The South Carolina Department of Archives and History in Columbia contacted Culture & Heritage Museums staff members to advise them of the flooding and ask them to be first responders. Nancy Sambets, Brooke Bauer and Danielle Failor assisted York County Courthouse staff by making an inventory, assessing water-damaged deed books, contacting disaster services and moving dry books to a temporary location while cleanup efforts took place.

Sambets, Bauer and Failor were prepared to respond through disaster-training workshops offered by the South Carolina State Historical Records Advisory Board at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.

The award will be presented at the South Carolina Historical Society’s Annual Meeting in Charleston on Feb. 7.
