Fall Family Fun

YORK COUNTY, S.C. – Fall is just around the corner and so are a variety of fun family events throughout Culture & Heritage Museum sites.

Science gets a spooky twist at Spooky Saturdays at Museum of York County in Rock Hill. Every Saturday throughout October promises creepy, crawly, and curious fun from bats and scary insects to mythical monsters and their real-life counterparts to poisonous plants. Spooky Saturday drop-in programs run from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. The museum is open for additional visitation and activities from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Harvest on the Homestead at Historic Brattonsville in McConnells showcases harvest time recipes, traditions, and techniques that early South Carolinians used to prepare for the coming winter months. Each day includes a live feeding of heritage breed barnyard animals at 10:30 a.m. and a guided site tour at 2 p.m. Oct. 4 features pumpkin stuffed apples and apple rolls, Oct. 18 is all about harvesting and weaving cotton, including indigo dyeing, and a 19th century cotton tour at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and Oct. 25 focuses on historic pumpkin recipes, from pumpkin pudding and potato pumpkins to winter food preserving.

The changing of the seasons historically also brought about another big change. “Plowshares into Swords”, marking the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution in this area, will be highlighted on Oct. 11. Hear about the crucial roles the New Acquisition Militia and the Third South Carolina Regiment played, discover the reasons for choosing the Loyalist or the Patriot side, and take a guided tour, including “1775: Times Began to be Troublesome” with Historian Zachary Lemhouse at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

As the harvest abundance leads into cooking season, Living History Saturdays in November at Historic Brattonsville focus on highlighting unique recipes from historic cookbooks during the culinary “Cook It ‘Til It’s Done” series. Historic Brattonsville events run from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Museum of York County is located at 4621 Mt. Gallant Rd., Rock Hill, S.C. 29732 and Historic Brattonsville is at 1444 Brattonsville Rd., McConnells, S.C. 29726. General Admission tickets for both sites can be purchased online at chmuseums.org or at the door. Adults are $12, seniors are $10, youth are $8, members and children 3 and younger are free.
