In honor of the 250th anniversaries of the American Revolution, staff historic interpreters and costumed volunteers will present a special Living History Saturday that highlights South Carolina’s wartime experience in the year 1776. In the shadow of the American victory at Sullivan’s Island and the Declaration of Independence, what was happening in the Carolina Piedmont? Historic interpreters will discuss that year’s fateful military actions and lead living history demonstrations of harvest-time work on the home front.
Ongoing Activities:
- Living history demonstrations of the Patriot militias that carried out the Cherokee War of 1776
- Recruitment to South Carolina’s Continental regiments
- 18th-century cooking
- Shucking and shelling the year’s corn harvest
- Carding and spinning wool sheared in the spring
Timed Activities:
- Animal feeding (10:30 a.m.)
- Huck’s Defeat battlefield tours (11 a.m. & 2 p.m.)
- Children’s military drill with the Captain of the 2nd South Carolina Regiment (Noon & 3 p.m.)
- Lecture: “The Cherokee War of 1776” with Trail Ranger Will Caldwell of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail (12:30 p.m.)
