Museum Seminar Series – Miocene Period

Twenty-five million years ago, North America was a very different place. Over the course of the Miocene Epoch, changes in climate altered the landscape and prompted large–scale adaptation, migration, and extinction of lifeforms. Rhinos, elephant-like gomphotheres, and giant “pigs” were the residents of the day. Along with horses, camels, and bizarre horned beasts, they had to contend with the world’s newest ecosystem – the grassland. Many creatures thrived and diversified in the open habitats, while others were forced to extinction. More challenges were yet to come with the Pliocene Epoch, when the earth entered a new phase of climate change that led to the Ice Ages.
