Spooky Saturdays at Museum of York County connects literary classics with the creepy world of natural science — animal omens, vampires of the natural world, and spiders — oh, my!
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Spooky science is on the books for drop-in programing at Museum of York County. Literary classics that portray the myths and legends of the world of blood-sucking animals and other creepy-crawlies will be reviewed alongside actual specimens in the museum’s Naturalist Center. Fun spooky-season natural science activities are in the cauldron for googly-eyed goblins of all ages.
2024 Spooky Saturdays at Museum of York County Itinerary:
Oct. 12 – Animal Omens. Black cats, ravens, ghostly hounds, and the natural history behind their myths and legends as portrayed in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” and “The Black Cat” as well as Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Hound of the Baskervilles.”
Oct. 19 – Vampires of the Natural World. Blood-sucking creatures, parasites, and vampire mythologies as portrayed in Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.”
Oct. 26 –Spiders. Focusing on web-weavers, which literary classics come to your mind that involves spiders? Should we actually be afraid of them?

The major permanent exhibit “Ice Age Carolinas: Exploring Our Pleistocene Past” is a journey-back-in-time experience that features the strange, gigantic, and fantastic beasts that once roamed the Carolinas. The Naturalist Center, with over 2,500 natural history specimens, provides hands-on opportunities for self-guided discovery and educational programs. The Settlemyre Planetarium presents a changing array of full-dome digital planetarium shows. The Museum Store has a selection of local handmade pottery and goods, locally produced food products, and nature-themed gifts. Outside, the museum has a picnic facility and a three-quarter mile nature trail.
