History Brought to Life at Children’s Day on the Farm
McCONNELLS, S.C. – A beloved springtime event, Children’s Day on the Farm, invites families to step back in time and experience hands-on activities of the life, work, and play through the eyes of an 18th century child. This year’s event will include a special focus on the American Revolution, marking the 250th anniversary of the war’s start on April 19, 1775, aligning with state-wide programming commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
In addition to meeting barnyard chicks and lambs, children and families will enjoy playing 18th century games, writing with quill pens, and engaging in “militia drills”. Visitors can also watch military cooking, see what camp life was like, and hear performances by the Guilford Courthouse Fife and Drum Corps. Blacksmithing and woodworking demonstrations will be ongoing throughout the day.
A special guided tour, “Walking in Watt’s Shoes” will honor the bravery of an enslaved young man named Watt, who warned Col. Bratton of the advancing British forces and contributed significantly to the American victory at the Battle of Huck’s Defeat, a pivotal event in the Revolutionary War in South Carolina.
Children’s Day on the Farm takes place in two sessions with identical activities in each session, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. Light concessions will be available for purchase.
Children’s militia drills will be held on the hour during the first session and at 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

About Historic Brattonsville:
Historic Brattonsville is a living history site that presents the agricultural and social history of the Carolina Piedmont from the American Revolution through the Reconstruction Era. The site features over 30 historic structures, including family houses, that provide the setting for the story of the Brattons, those enslaved on the plantation, and the Enslaved Ancestral Burial Ground, the final resting place of 481 people of African descent. The site spreads over 800-acres and comprises farmed land with heritage breed animals, a Revolutionary War battlefield, and a nature preserve with miles of walking trails. Seasonal events, reenactments, and living history programs interpret life in the 18th and 19th centuries.
