Where Loyalties Lie: Huck’s Defeat Battle Reenactment

McCONNELLS, S.C. – Step back in time to the American Revolution during the annual Battle of Huck’s Defeat battle reenactment weekend at Historic Brattonsville. The sights, sounds, and spirit of America’s fight for independence come alive July 12 with the Battle of Huck’s Defeat and July 13 with the Battle of Reedy River.

While the battle reenactments themselves take place at 2 p.m. both days, visitors will have the opportunity before and after the battles for a full Revolutionary experience. Throughout the weekend there will be authentic military camp displays, cooking and blacksmithing demonstrations, an 18th-century home to explore, a historic clothing display, and a chance for children and families to play authentic toys and games.

A cavalry charge by the Third Continental Light Dragoons will be daily at 11 a.m. along with a cannon and musket artillery demonstration by Kingsbury’s Militia, firing at 11:30 a.m., followed by “1775: The Origins of South Carolina’s Role in the American Revolution” at noon by Culture & Heritage Museums’ Historian Zach Lemhouse. Before and after the battles, battlefield and preservation site tours will begin at 1 and 3 p.m., and children will have an opportunity to take part in militia drills at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday’s activities will include an 18th century church service beginning at the 10:30 a.m. bell.

This year’s reenactment commemorates the 245th anniversary of the original Battle of Huck’s Defeat, which helped turn the tide of the war in the Patriot Southern Campaign and aligns with state-wide programming commemorating the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution.

About Historic Brattonsville:

Historic Brattonsville is a living history site that presents the agricultural and social history of the Carolina Piedmont from the American Revolution through the Reconstruction Era.  The site features over 30 historic structures, including family houses, that provide the setting for the story of the Brattons, those enslaved on the plantation, and the Enslaved Ancestral Burial Ground, the final resting place of 481 people of African descent. The site spreads over 800-acres and comprises farmed land with heritage breed animals, a Revolutionary War battlefield, and a nature preserve with miles of walking trails. Seasonal events, reenactments, and living history programs interpret life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Historic Brattonsville is included in The Green Book of South Carolina – a travel guide to African American cultural sites.
