There’s No Place Like the Museum for Wizard of Oz Science Saturday

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Follow the road of yellow bricks on an exciting adventure through the magical world of science, nature, and imagination at Museum of York County (MYCO) Oz. A whimsical and educational event invites guests of all ages to join Dorothy and Toto for a family-fun Saturday filled with curiosity and creativity.

There’s no place like MYCO Oz! Discover the magic behind the curtain through on-going activities:

  • Dig for gems with Dirt Dauber Deb’s Mobile Gem Mine and learn about sparkling treasures found in the Carolina Piedmont, even rubies! (The first 100 miners receive a $3 discount on a gem mining experience of their choosing.)
  • Experience the power of wind and tornadoes with an up-close demonstration
  • Don’t be a cowardly lion! Test your courage with a hands-on mystery box challenge
  • Uncover the science behind rainbows and light with interactive experiments
  • Find the melting points of elements like gold and silver
  • “No Place Like Home Planet” free planetarium show runs every 30 minutes beginning at 10:30 a.m.
  • Got a heart? Discover how heartbeats of different animals, including hummingbirds, dogs, and horses vary and listen to your own with a stethoscope
  • Test your brains with riddles and a scavenger hunt
  • Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my! Compare the Ice Age American Lion, short-faced bear, and the sabertooth “tiger” to modern counterparts

Museum of York County highlights the world of natural history in the Carolina Piedmont through award-winning exhibits, planetarium shows, and special programs. “Before the Ice Ages: Miocene and Pliocene Beasts of the Southeast” is Museum of York County’s newest permanent exhibit that looks at the strange and bizarre creatures that roamed the southeast before the Ice Ages of the Pleistocene. “Ice Age Carolinas: Exploring Our Pleistocene Past” is a journey-back-in-time experience that features the gigantic and fantastic beasts that once roamed the Carolinas.
